History
Stoke Climsland has a long history of organised sport and community recreation. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the village regularly hosted Cornish wrestling tournaments and other local competitions, reflecting a strong culture of physical recreation and shared village identity.
After the First World War, a village football team was formed to provide returning soldiers with a sense of camaraderie and purpose. This early team achieved notable success in local competitions and helped establish football and cricket as central parts of village life.
As community sport developed, a need arose for a dedicated social and recreational venue. In 1955, the former village shop in the centre of Stoke Climsland was converted into the Sports & Social Club. Leased from the Duchy of Cornwall, the building was adapted into a clubhouse, offering a warm and welcoming indoor space beside the playing field. This marked a significant moment in the village’s post-war renewal, as residents came together to create a hub that would serve both sporting and social needs.
Over the decades, the club’s facilities and activities expanded. A pavilion was added by the sports field to provide changing rooms and storage for teams, while the field itself continued to host football and cricket matches. Indoor games also flourished, with darts, snooker, and pool leagues contributing to a year-round calendar of friendly competition. Generations of local families have taken part in teams, served on committees, and volunteered behind the bar, ensuring that the club has remained rooted in community involvement.
Today, the Stoke Climsland Sports & Social Club remains a key focal point of village life. It hosts social gatherings, live music, charity events, seasonal celebrations, and plays a leading role during the annual Village Show. With no other public house in the immediate village, the club provides an essential meeting place and a welcoming environment for residents of all ages. More than seventy years since its founding, it continues to uphold the values that shaped it: community spirit, shared enjoyment, and the belief that sport and social connection strengthen village life.
